Pilotage

OVERVIEW

The Port of Tyne’s pilotage service is accredited by the International Standards for Pilotage Organisations.

It’s one of only three services in the UK and 18 services globally to have this accreditation. This confirms that we deliver a pilotage service of an extremely high standard, that is transparent in operation, and continuously improving safety and quality. We’re proud of that.

Pilotage, coordinated by Tyne Vessel Traffic Services, is compulsory (with some exceptions) for vessels over 50 metres in length. For frequent callers to berths in the River Tyne, Pilot Exemption Certificates are available, on application to the Harbour Master.

The pilot boarding station is three miles North East of the harbour entrance.
