CAPTAIN AMAZING MEETS CAPTAIN NICHOLSON 12 Apr 2013

The current play to be staged by Live Theatre tells the story of a father who dreams up an alter ego superhero called Captain Amazing. The Port of Tyne's own Captain and superhero, the Port's Harbour Master Captain Nicholson took time out to visit Live Theatre to learn more.

In a special year-long relationship the Port of Tyne is working in partnership with Live Theatre to celebrate their 40th anniversary programme through its strong connections to the river, the Port and the heritage of the region.

Though he denies he is a superhero, his statutory powers to ensure safe navigation of the River Tyne mean that he and his team have performed some amazing feats by bringing in some of the world's largest ships in to the river.

"Now that the river is deeper than it has ever been, our team of pilots have handled some of the largest cargo ships ever seen on the river in recent years and joking apart they're doing a fantastic job to keep the river and the Port of Tyne open for business," said: Mike Nicholson, Harbour Master for the Port of Tyne.

Jim Beirne, Chief Executive at Live Theatre said: "It was great to meet the Port of Tyne's Captain and Harbour Master Mike Nicholson. We're delighted to be working with the Port of Tyne to help celebrate our 40th anniversary programme.

"Our current play Captain Amazing features an exceptional solo performance by Mark Weinman, who performs over ten characters. The play will both entertain and move audiences at Live Theatre and when it transfers to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August."

Captain Amazing written by Bruntwood Prize winning author Alistair McDowall, performed by Mark Weinman, and directed by Clive Judd is running at Live Theatre in Newcastle until Saturday 13 April and will head to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.
