Port of Tyne is key ingredient for EAT! NewcastleGateshead27 Jun 2014

The Port of Tyne has announced its sponsorship of NewcastleGateshead Initiative's food and drink festival EAT! NewcastleGateshead, which takes place throughout summer 2014.

Counting some of the UK's biggest importers of tea amongst its customers, the Port of Tyne is a natural fit with EAT! NewcastleGateshead's first event of the year, Tea & Cake Planet - a two day celebration of the nation's favourite tipple.

Taking place at The Boiler Shop, Newcastle, on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June 2014, the event brings together some of the North East's leading tea-upstarts with century-old blenders for two days of tea dances, pop-up afternoon tea, tea-themed street food stalls, traditional tea parties, and tea-themed cocktails and beer.

Fenwick Newcastle, The Vermont Hotel, SIX @ BALTIC and The *TeaShed present four pop-up tearooms, each with a different theme.  There will also be 15 tea and cake stalls from the best local producers the North East has to offer.  Delve into the science of tea with Centre for Life, look into your future with a tea leaf reading from Madame Zara or enjoy a traditional Chinese tea ceremony with Lulu Chai.

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive, said: "The Port of Tyne handles a third of the UK's tea imports from all over the world and has 22 different varieties stored in its warehouse in South Shields.

"This year's EAT! festival programme will feature some of the Port's customers including Ringtons Tea and Tetley and we hope many more people will join in and help celebrate the festival's eighth anniversary."

Ringtons Tea, Tetley Tea and Spicer's Tea are all imported via the Port of Tyne.  4 million kilos of Ringtons Tea comes through the Port of Tyne ever year, that's enough for 1.5 billion cups.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive of destination management and marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which produces EAT! NewcastleGateshead. said: "We're delighted to be working with the Port of Tyne on this year's EAT! festival and particularly around Tea & Cake Planet.

EAT! festival showcases the very best in North East food and the Port of Tyne is a great supporter of local producers, businesses and communities.  Its support allows us to create more exciting experiences during EAT! and collaborate on events like Naked Feasts, which this year, will include a unique dinner on the Port of Tyne's Swing Bridge platform in the middle of the River Tyne."

Jo Atkinson, Operations Manager at TASTECLUB which supports and promotes North East food and drink businesses said: "EAT! NewcastleGateshead does a fantastic job of raising the profile of local food and drink businesses based in the region. It provides opportunities for them to showcase their products and partner with organisations like Port of Tyne on exciting one-off events."

Tea & Cake Planet, A Weekend Adventure in Brewing and Baking, takes place on Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 June 2014.  For more information and to book tickets, please visit www.eatnewcastlegateshead.com
