PORT OF TYNE NAMED NORTH EAST COMPANY OF THE YEAR 201325 Apr 2013

The Port of Tyne became the toast of the business community after being named Company of the Year at The North East Business Awards final.

As the thriving trading gateway for the North East region to Europe and beyond, the Port's win comes a month after it took top prize for Tyneside & Northumberland awards and tops a hugely successful year for the Port.

Last month the Port unveiled its highest cargo figures in more than 20 years and it is about to announce record financial figures for 2012, having seen profit more than double to £9m last year.

The Port scooped the award ahead of two very worthy finalists at the culmination of the annual awards, organised by The Journal and the Evening Gazette on Teesside, in association with the North East Chamber of Commerce.

Rapidly expanding computer games company Double Eleven took Company of the Year in the Teesside heat, while Derwentside Homes was named Durham & Wearside winner.

The Port of Tyne's win was the culmination of the annual awards night at Hardwick Hall in Sedgefield, hosted by television presenter Kim Inglis, where more than 500 guests from across the region's business community had gathered to learn the winners in 11 categories.
