PORT OF TYNE SHINES A LIGHT ON YOUNG TALENT 11 Feb 2016

The Port of Tyne is proud to be supporting the Best of South Tyneside Awards once again sponsoring the Young Performer category.

This year's Young Performer finals will be held at the Customs House in South Shields on Monday, April 18. The winner will be revealed at the Best of South Tyneside finals on Thursday, June 9.

Talented young people in the borough are encouraged to enter the awards by getting in touch with the Shields Gazette, simply email nicola.meldrum@jpress.co.uk and lynn.wild@northeast-press.co.uk.

Port of Tyne Director of Corporate Affairs, Susan Wear praised the competition as: "A great event that really makes a difference to the young people of the area."

Susan added: "The Customs House is an inspirational place where people strive to do their best. They are encouraged and supported by great people.

"What makes the Young Performer Award great is the way it helps young talent to develop."

Susan said: "A lot goes in to supporting people who have a dream or a talent. It is not just the contribution we make, but other companies and organisations that really want to see South Tyneside thrive and want to see young people doing their best in whatever field it is."

Another big supporter of the Young Performer Award event is the Customs House, the South Shields venue where the Young Performer finals night will be held in April.

Ray Spencer, Executive Director of the Customs House, said: "There's always a superb line-up of singers but the contest is not just exclusively for soloists - or just singers. "It would be good to see people who are maybe in a group. Perhaps dancers or something unusual like juggling or magicians."

He praised last year's winner Eve Simpson, who sings, plays the piano, the guitar and the banjo, and who impressed the judges by performing a song she had composed herself.

"It is great to see her progress and she joins a long line of people who put themselves forward for Young Performer to showcase their talents, and the award really can act as a launch pad for their future careers."

If you know any talented young people in your friends or family nominate them via the website www.jpne-events.co.uk/best-of-south-tyneside-nominate.

In addition to the Young Performer category other Best of South Tyneside categories include: Role Model of the Year, Neighbour of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Child of Achievement, Fundraiser of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Carer of the Year, Sporting Excellence, Sports Team of the Year, Community Champion, Student of the Year, Community Group, Volunteer of the Year, Child of Courage and Lifetime Contribution.

The closing date for nominations is Friday 6th May 2016.
