The Port of Tyne has statutory responsibility for navigation on the river with jurisdiction from the tidal stone at Wylam stretching 17 miles down river and 1 mile past the roundheads at the piers.

Within Port limits shipping movements are controlled 24 hours a day by Tyne Vessel Traffic Services (Call sign Tyne VTS) at North Shields. Tyne VTS maintain a continuous watch on VHF international Maritime Channels 16 and 12. Channel 12 is designated as the primary port operating frequency.

The river is navigable over a distance of 15 miles (24km) and the Port is accessible at all states of the tide and there are no length or beam restrictions for vessels in the entrance to the Port. With a controlled channel depth of 10m, 12.1m at Riverside Quay and 13.0m at Tyne Bulk Terminal.

  • Weather forecasts and visibility reports (commercial requests only - charges may apply)
  • Wind speed and direction at North Pier, Riverside Quay and Whitehill Point
  • Tide height at North Shields
  • Details of any hazards to navigation

Port Services

Port Services are centrally controlled by Tyne VTS including pilotage, towage and mooring.

  • Pilotage is compulsory with exceptions for vessels 50 m and over in length. The Pilot service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Pilot boarding is generally one to three miles east of the harbour entrance. Pilot exemption certificates are available on application to the Harbour Master.
  • Bunkers are available in Port and should be arranged through the shipping agent.
  • Water is available at some berths; please contact Tyne VTS for details.
  • There are a number of companies that will supply stores to ships in the Port. Details can be obtained from shipping agents.
