Notice to Mariners No 20 of 2024 - Safety Share - Use of Personal Flotation Devices

Safety Share – Use of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

We would like to share an unfortunate incident that recently occurred on the River Tyne.

During the transfer of two people from a dinghy to a vessel on a river mooring, one person unexpectedly fell overboard. The second person then entered the water to assist his friend. Unfortunately, neither of them had personal flotation devices (PFDs) on, therefore making it difficult for them to stay afloat or return to the dinghy. Fortunately, nearby workers spotted them holding onto a mooring and raised the alarm. Thankfully this resulted in their prompt rescue.

This is a stark reminder to all, of the importance of safety equipment. Whilst we all wish to enjoy the benefits of being on the water, incidents like these should serve as a warning. Please ensure that all river users have a suitable lifejacket or buoyancy aid when out on the water.

  1. Always Wear a PFD: No matter how skilled a swimmer you are, the waters can be unpredictable.  A PFD provides extra buoyancy and ensures you stay afloat, giving you a better chance to respond to unexpected situations.
  2. Be Prepared: Before heading out onto the river, ensure that you and your crew have access to suitable lifejackets or buoyancy aids.  Check them for proper fit and functionality and ensure they are inspected and maintained as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Buddy System: When possible, avoid going out on the water alone.  Having someone with you can greatly enhance safety.  If an accident occurs, having someone there to assist and alert others can be a lifesaver.
  4. Know Your Limits: Remember, the river's conditions can change rapidly.  Be aware of your own skills and the conditions you're venturing into.  Avoid situations that could potentially put you at risk and always have a healthy respect for the river.

As mariners of the River Tyne, we are all responsible for each other's safety.  Let's keep the waters of the Tyne a place of enjoyment by putting safety first.
