Notice to Mariners No 15 of 2024 - Dolphin Activity

Cetaceans within the River Tyne Area

All river users are hereby advised of the increased numbers of dolphins within the statutory harbour limits of the Port of Tyne.

In line with advice from the Marine Management Organisation, all river users should avoid close contact with dolphins, particularly in the case of mothers with young.

Dolphins should not be actively pursued and sudden increases in speed or changes in course should be avoided if they are riding the bow wave.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981, it is an offence to recklessly or intentionally disturb them.

If you observe any dolphins or porpoises being disturbed please contact the local Marine Management Organisation office or the local police wildlife crime officer on 101.
